Chapter 14

A little past two in the morning, Anthony banged his hand down on his desk, causing Eloane to jerk upright in the bed.

“Dammit!” said Anthony.

“What’s wrong?”

“Harold just sent me a file, and it’s absolute gobbledygook. Now I’m going to have to spend the time fixing his terrible work.”

“Time,” said Eloane. “Something we don’t have a lot of.”

Anthony got out of his chair and dropped down onto his hands into a push-up position. He started to do push-ups furiously while cursing under his breath. In less than half a minute, he had pumped his way through twenty-five push-ups. Panting, he got back up to his feet.

Eloane was impressed that someone who had not appeared particularly athletic could blast out a set of push-ups like that.

Anthony turned to her. “Are you hungry?”

“A little,” said Eloane, telling a half-truth. She was actually quite hungry, but thought she could work through it.

“Too late for room service. Damn.”

“Maybe we should just keep working. We’ve got so much to do.”

“I’m too pissed to keep working,” said Anthony. “Let’s go find something to eat.”

Eloane got off the bed. “Hmm… I’m not really dressed for going out.”

“Can you wear the sweatpants?”

“Yeah—they should be okay.”

Eloane went to the bathroom where she had left the pants and slipped into them. They were tight, but they were better than nothing.

Eloane emerged from the bathroom. “Okay. So what’s your plan for finding us food?”

“The plan is… we figure it out as we go.”

“We could just go to my cabin. I have lots of food there.”

“What would be the fun in that?” said Anthony. “I need more of a distraction to reset my mind. I need the thrill of the hunt. I’ll find us something.”

“So you have a talent for magically finding food after hours?”

“My talent is providing. That’s what I do. I provide.”

“Like with your family?” observed Eloane.

“Yes. It’s what a man does for the people he takes care of.”

Eloane almost made a joking comment in response to Anthony’s serious tone, but she sensed it might trigger something in him, so she held back.

Eloane borrowed a pair of fuzzy hotel slippers and stepped into them. “Alright. Provide.”

Anthony led the way as they left the room to find the corridor outside to be quiet. As they headed down the deserted hallway toward the elevator, Eloane had the sensation that they were doing something illicit, that they were sneaking around the inn in the dead of night. She felt strangely giddy, like a naughty child. Dressed in borrowed sweats and hotel slippers only enhanced the feeling. She smiled to herself.

Anthony pressed the down button on the elevator.

“So where is your hunting instinct taking you?” asked Eloane.

“Down. Down to where food comes from.”

“The Blue Room?”

The elevator doors opened. “Yup.”

They stepped in and took the elevator down to the ground floor.

“But it will be long closed,” said Eloane.

“Where there’s a will…”

The elevator stopped, and the doors opened. As they left the elevator, they were met with more deserted halls and silence.

They made their way to the Blue Room to find its heavy double doors closed.
